Masseria of the Monks

Let yourself be led where stones tell stories and light shapes the present.

Amidst expanses of olive trees, the breath of the sea and a timeless tranquillity, Masseria dei Monaci is more than just a destination: it is an experience to be lived. Its history is deeply linked to the Otranto area, a place where nature, sea and culture have been intertwined for centuries.

Nestled in the Salento countryside, the masseria is named after the ancient Abbey of San Nicola di Casole, one of the most important cultural centres of the medieval Mediterranean. In this unique landscape, a place takes shape that invites you to slow down, to savour every moment and rediscover, if only for a short while, an authentic connection with nature and with your own inner rhythm.

The legacy of Casole Abbey

Masseria dei Monaci has its roots in the ancient Basilian complex of the Abbey of San Nicola di Casole, founded in the 5th century a few kilometres from Otranto. This place was an important centre of study and translation for centuries, where monks and students from all over the Mediterranean dedicated themselves to the dissemination of Greek and Latin culture.

Over the centuries, the masseria also played a strategic defensive role against incursions from the sea, sharing the fate of the city during the most difficult moments of its history, such as the Turkish invasion of 1480.

Today, restored and returned to its original beauty, Masseria dei Monaci continues to guard this heritage: a place where history, nature and silence meet, offering guests an authentic experience in the heart of Salento.

Swimming pool in Mediterranean tranquillity

Inside the masseria, two swimming pools surrounded by greenery offer spaces designed for relaxation. The main pool, large and linear, is framed by light-coloured stone and loungers overlooking the turquoise water, in harmony with the architecture and Mediterranean nature.

A water refuge among ancient stones where time slows down

A swimming pool with an enchanting view of the Bay of Orte welcomes you as an oasis of tranquillity, where the blue of the sea merges with the intense light of summer. More intimate is the second: an ancient “pilune”, a precious stone pool in the Salento tradition, now reinterpreted as an exclusive hydromassage space. Here, a delicate waterfall designs soft water games, enveloping the environment in a suspended, intimate and deeply regenerating atmosphere, amidst centuries-old olive trees and golden reflections.

The authentic awakening of Salento

Ours is a typically Salento breakfast, essential, authentic and deeply linked to the land and its seasons. An experience to be lived slowly, amidst natural light and morning silences.

We bring to the table only what really belongs to this territory: selected local products, home-made preparations, simple and recognisable ingredients. Traditional sweets, fragrant bread, savoury proposals, fresh fruit and a selection of local honeys, along with artisan jams and extra virgin olive oil.

Every morning, the table becomes a gesture of identity: clean and true flavours to start the day in a sincere and deeply Salento way.
